Acupressure Point GB21: Gallbladder 21 or Jian Jing

Jian Jing (GB21) is most commonly used for pain, neck stiffness, shoulder tension, and headaches.

Jian Jing (GB21) is most commonly used for pain, neck stiffness, shoulder tension, and headaches. Jian Jing (GB 21) is located in the muscle by first pinching the shoulder muscle with your thumb and middle finger. To use acupressure on this point, (1) locate the point and pinch as directed, then (2) using your index finger, apply downward pressure to massage and stimulate the area for 4-5 seconds while releasing your pinch.

The point is located on the shoulder half way between the rotator cuff and the vertebrae column.

This point is located by pinching the shoulder muscle with your thumb and middle finger.

Apply downward pressure with your index finger or thumb. Massage or hold for 4-5 seconds.

A precaution for this point is that Jian Jing (GB21) may induce labor, thus it must never be used during pregnancy.

In the scientific literature, Jian Jing (GB21) is used as one of the point combinations to successfully alleviate chronic daily headaches in a pilot, double-blind controlled trial [1]. Another study conducted in Brazil showed that electroacupuncture used to stimulate Jian Jing (GB21) significantly reduced the myofascial pain in the upper trapezius muscle [2].
